Mousumi
has been dancing
since she was five. Along with dance she
had Prabhakar degree in vocal music (Rabindrasangit) under the guidance of her grandmother Bullu Rani Ballav (disciple of Mira Bandhopadhay) and Rama Dey (disciple of Ashoktoru Bandhopadhay). She has earned six years of extensive training in Sitar under tutelage of her father Riten Sawoo (disciple of Ustad Ali Ahmad Khan) and Sudhir Das. She has given numerous professional performances through-out India with the distinguished dance Company "Uday Shankar India culture center". She was honored to have Pandit Ravi Shankar as her audience while she was performing a role in “Kalmrigaya” directed by Smt. Amala Shankar and got the blessing from the great master. At “ Uday Shankar India culture center”, she had Smt. Amala Shankar and Smt. Mamata Shankar as her creative dance teacher, Guru Rajen Bose as Kathak dance teacher, Guru Muralidhar Majhi as Odissi dance teacher and Guru P. Raghavan as Kathakali dance teacher. Mousumi has been learning Kathak all through her life
She is a former student
from “Padatik”, a renowned institution in
Kolkata, In the year 2003, Mousumi had attended a weeklong workshop under the tutelage of legendary Guru Pandit Birju Maharaj in Minneapolis. She had passed the audition under Pt. Birju Maharaj and Mrs. Saswati Sen successfully and was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to perform with them at the O'Shaughnessy auditorium in Minneapolis, MN, for their exclusive dance production ‘LOHA’. Mousumi had also attended a weeklong workshop ( Manipuri Dance) under Bimavati devi (daughter of Guru Bipin Singh), and some other short workshops under Rita Mustafi (kathak), Ranee Ramaswami (Bharatanayam), and Guru Bandana Sen (Kathak). Besides Indian dances ,Mousumi has taken training in Sri Lankan dance. She had performed twice for Festival of Nations with the SriLankan group at River Center of St Paul, MN. Mousumi has been teaching Indian classical dance including fusion, folk and creative style since last 15 yrs. Some of her in-house productions are “Anjali”, “Taal”, “Jhalak”, “ Panchabhuta”, “Chitrangada”. Mousumi has been awarded five times as master artist by The North Dakota Council on the arts through traditional art category grant award . She is also the recipient of professional development grant award for three times. She had also served Minnesota state art board ( Folk Art Division) as a panel member in the yr of 1996 through 1997. Other than musical and dance background Mousumi has a M.S. degree in Geography from Calcutta University. She has been working for a digital mapping company “NAVTEQ”, as a geographer for last seven years. Mousumi with her husband Madhusudan Bhandary who is an associate professor of Statistics (CSU) are also busy in raising their two kids, Debarghya and Trisha .
